The Gulf beaches drive: Clearwater down to Pass-a-Grille
· Tampa Bay Drive
There is a road that runs down the barrier islands from Clearwater Beach to Pass-a-Grille, and driving the length of it is one of the better ways to spend a day on this coast. It is about twenty-five miles. It takes far longer than twenty-five miles suggests, and that is the point.
The stops, north to south
Clearwater Beach. The busiest and the most developed. Wide, white, lifeguarded, and surrounded by everything you would expect. If you want a beach with amenities and do not mind company, this is it.
Sand Key. Immediately south, and a different experience — a county park with a fraction of the crowd. The bridge between the two is short and the change in atmosphere is not.
Indian Rocks and Indian Shores. Residential, low-rise, quieter. This stretch is where the coast starts to feel like a place people live rather than visit.
Madeira Beach. John's Pass sits here — a boardwalk, boats and a working pass between the islands. Good for an hour out of the sun.
Treasure Island. Broad and unhurried, with the easiest parking of the busy beaches.
St. Pete Beach. The best-known of the southern stretch, and the busiest after Clearwater.
Pass-a-Grille. The southern tip, and the reason to do the whole drive. Older, smaller, and largely free of high-rises. The sunset here is the one people come back for.
How long it actually takes
Without stopping, under an hour. With stops, the entire day — and the drawbridges are the reason the first number is unreliable. Several of the passes are crossed by bridges that open for boat traffic, and when one opens you wait. It is not long, but it is not schedulable.
Do not plan this drive against a hard deadline. It is a day, not a transit.
Practical notes
Parking is the constraint at every stop, not the driving. Read the St. Pete Beach parking guide before you set out, because the same pattern holds up the whole chain: early or late is fine, the middle of the day in season is not.
Sand gets in everything. A towel for the seats is worth more than it sounds, and returning a car full of beach is a cleaning charge on any rental agreement, ours included — the policy sets out what that means.
